Right from his childhood D.S. Deshpande was the student of H.V.P.Mandal, In student age itself he acquired great skill in various types of Indian physical Exercises. In 1929-28 in youth organization of the Mandal Martyr Rajguru, Dr. Kokardekar, Mr. Ramanna, Mr. Shrivastav took an oath to sacrifice everything for the supreme cause of the nation. In 1928-29 Deshpande was sent to Gorakhpur in U.P for conducting the Physical Education Camp. After it was over he toured Panjab and North India for two months and established contact with the revolutionaries like BhagatSingh and Chandrashekhar Azad. After coming back he toured western Maharashtra and met Dr. Sawarkar.
The Maharaja of Ichalkaranji state from Maharashtra had announced one scholarship for Judo training in Japan. The Mandal succeeded in securing this scholarship through Deccan Education Society, Poona. Considering his merits the mandal selected D.S.Deshpande for this Scholarship. In 1930 Deshpande went to Japan for the Judo training. The detailed course in Judo Covering three years duration was completed in one session only by Deshpande.
While prosecuting his studies he acquired experience as a journalist. He worked for “Asahi Shimbun ”. At the time of China-Japan war he was sent as a war reporter on the battle field. While working in this capacity he came in contact with the Japanese General and various important personalities in the war. By this time he had entered the inner circle of the Japanese politics. He had become one with the stream of the Japanese political and social life. He secured citizenship of Japan and got married with a Japanese girl.
Famous Indian Revolutionary Mr. Rasbihari Bose who were settled in Japan was trying for the Freedom of India. Deshpande came in contact with Mr. Bose and the intimacy resulted in his working as his chief secretary in 1938-39. During the second World War Mr. Bose had formed the committee for the freedom of India. At Bangkok in Thiland this committee convened the conference for the Indian Independence. Deshpande attended this conference. He had compiled the information of the Indians settled in the Far East Countries. This information proved very much useful for Rasbihari Bose, and later on ,for Mr. Subhash Chandra Bose in forming Swatantra Bharat Sangh and Indian National Army. When Mr. Rasbihari Bose entrusted the responsibility of his mission to Subhash Chandra Bose, he deputed Mr. Deshpande to work along with Subhash Chandra Bose. Later on Subhash Chandra Formed the Free Indian Government in exile. Its office was established in Rangoon. Mr. Deshpande also came to Rangoon. As Japan Faced defeat in the war Japanese citizens at Rangoon were captured as war prisoners. Deshpande was one of them. Later on Japan surrendered and it was decided to repatriate these prisoners to Japan. The Red Cross ship carrying these prisoners was sunk by the British Navy in 1944. In this tragic accident destiny gave a full stop to the fiery and glorious career of Mr. Dnyaneshwar Deshpande.
