Archer Mr. Khaniwale
Right from his childhood Khaniwale was the member of H.V.P. Mandal. After acquiring commendable skill in Indian Physical Education System and Sports he concentrated on Archery. In 5-6 years he studied this art to the minutest detail. In a few days he attained fame as a skilled archer. In 1930 – 31 he gave innumerable demonstrations at Nagpur, Bombay, Indore, Wardha and several other places which were acclaimed by all.Subsequently he decided to go to some foreign country to acquire further knowledge and skill in archery. In those days Japan was famous for its Archery. Hence, Mandal took the decision to send him to Japan. In January 1933 he was given warm sendoff under the Presidentship of Babasaheb Khaparde.In Japan he gave several demonstrations before Indo-Japanese Committee, Kobe Preacher’s Governor and the Mayor of Kobe, the editor of ‘Osaka Asahi’ and several journalists. The Osaka Asahi paper came out with all praise for him. It expressed in clear words its surprise and said he has some supernatural power at his command. It further said that his archery was peerless. ‘Osaka Menechi’ under the heading “The Indian Star Archer in Japan” wrote 23 years in age young Khaniwale possesses something that is quite novel in Japan in the domain of Archery. In its issue of 1st March 1933 Asahi Sports wrote under the title ‘William Tail’ that Khaniwale was so much skilled in Archery that he could be ranked with ‘William Tail’ of Switzerland or Japan’s Supreme Archer ‘Yorchi Nasuno’.
For his outstanding skills in Archery Mr. Khaniwale was presented with the ‘Blue Flag’ in Japan, which was considered rare honour received by very few. He was first Indian to receive the same.
In Japan, subsequently he joined Kodokan University for Judo and obtained ‘Black Belt’ title in Judo.
Khaniwale was Joint-Secretary of the Team sent for Pedagogic Congress that was convened along with 11th Olympic in 1936. He has established Judo Association at Poona. He trained youths in Judo. Youths trained by him dominate All India Judo Competitions. Khaniwale was the sole ‘Black Belt’ holder in India and famous Indo expert. Under his able guidance Mandal runs ‘Judo Training Centre’.
